Erk Russell was a highly successful college football coach who is most well-known for his time at Georgia Southern University. He was born on July 23, 1926, in Baker County, Georgia, and passed away on September 8, 2006.
Russell started his coaching career as an assistant at Georgia, and later had stints at Auburn and Vanderbilt before becoming the head coach at Georgia Southern in 1982. During his time at Georgia Southern, Russell led the Eagles to three NCAA Division I-AA national championships (1985, 1986, 1989) and five Southern Conference titles.
Known for his intense coaching style and signature bald head, Russell was beloved by his players and fans alike. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. The football stadium at Georgia Southern University, Paulson Stadium, is named in his honor.
Erk Russell's impact on college football, particularly at the small school level, is still felt today, and he is remembered as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport.
